HOWTO: Move a server

Moving an IntelliPlant installation from one computer to another is fairly straightforward, but performing the steps in the correct order can streamline the process and keep downtime to a minimum. You’ll just need to: create a new license file, copy the configuration, and run the installer.

Create a new license file

Each license file allows the IntelliPlant server software to run on a set of specific computers. Before the software will run on the new machine, a license file targeting that specific machine must be created.

Follow the steps to create a license file, but you’ll only need to create and upload the Server ID for the new replacement machine.

Copy the configuration

Find the plant’s database directory on the old server. It should be C:\IntelliPlant_Data, but older versions may still use C:\CE_Database. Copy that directory to the new machine.

Now, copy the newly-created License.config file into the \Config directory within the plant directory on the new machine.

Run the installer

Run the installer on the new machine. It will see the plant directory and confirm that you want to upgrade the existing installation.

If the network name or the IP address is the same as the old machine, clients will be able to find it. Otherwise, you will need to open each client’s Network Configuration and update the new server’s connection info.
